Waterpiks are wonderful machines that can effectively supplement your dental care routine. Waterpiks are very helpful in removing debris from in between your teeth and can help to massage and strengthen your gums. The machines are also fun and comfortable to use for most patients. Waterpiks can be very beneficial to your dental health, under the following circumstances:

You Do Not Replace Flossing

Flossing is a very important component of dental care, whether or not you choose to use a waterpik. Flossing removes plaque from teeth and gums, whereas a waterpik only flushes out the teeth and gums. When a waterpik is used after flossing, it can remove more debris and can flush out plaque that has been loosened by flossing.

You Use the Proper Technique

A waterpik should be held at a 90 degree angle to your teeth and gum line. You should direct the waterpik at the teeth, in between the teeth, and then at the gums for maximum effectiveness. It doesn’t matter where in your mouth you start to use the waterpik, but it is important to flush out both sides of each tooth. If you have braces, be sure to also direct the water stream behind each bracket.

You Keep the Proper Speed

Using a waterpik at low to medium speed can gently massage the gums, which can help to strengthen them and keep them healthy. While it may seem like putting a waterpik on high speed would help to flush out debris and plague better, high speed is actually not suitable for most individuals. High speeds can irritate the gums and push debris back into the gum line.

You Have Trouble Flossing

If you have trouble flossing or have some areas between the teeth that floss cannot reach, a waterpik can be very beneficial. The water may help to flush debris from these areas that would otherwise remain trapped. Waterpiks can also be very helpful for young children that do not yet understand how to floss. The waterpik may be easier and more fun to use, which can encourage children to use the machine daily.

You Still See Your Dentist

It is important that you still visit your Orlando dentist at least twice a year for regular cleanings and check-ups. Using a waterpik is a great way to keep your teeth and gums as healthy as possible, as long as you still brush twice per day, floss once per day, and visit your dentist for regularly scheduled appointments. Based on the details of your specific case, your dentist may provide you with advice for further actions to take in order to improve your dental health. If you have any questions about how to use a waterpik or whether a waterpik is right for you, consult your dentist.
