Bad Dental Habits To Chat With Patients About – Part 2

Addressing Bad Dental Habits

This blog is a follow up to Part 1, which is based on an article on MedicineNet.com that discusses bad dental habits to avoid.

We’re in the heart of the summer season when barbecuing and snacking are enjoyed by many. These activities present challenges to maintaining dental health and we should all make our patients aware of them.

First on today’s list of bad dental habits is chewing on ice. Drinking a cold beverage is a great way to cool off, but don’t chew on the ice! Doing so could cause cracks or chips in teeth. Even a small crack is problematic as it can result in a tooth fracture over time.

Up next – Potato chips. A summertime favorite can create big problems for teeth due to their high starch content. Bacteria feed on the starches that potato chips leave on your teeth and create acids that erode tooth enamel. Eat a carrot or apple after a serving of potato chips to remove starch on your teeth.

This brings up the topic of snacking in general. The damage to teeth from constantly snacking, as is so prevalent during summer events, can be mitigated. Chose snacks that help clean your teeth like celery, apples and carrots. Cut down on sugary drinks and alcohol by drinking water to reduce bacteria in the mouth.

Enjoy your summer celebrations and be smart about your teeth!
