We’re moving into the cold and flu season. Many of us will be seeking relief of a sore throat and coughing. Do yourself and your patients a favor – talk to them about choosing sugar-free lozenges and cough drops. They may not be aware that a sugar or corn syrup sweetened lozenge sitting in the mouth encourages tooth decay.
Summer vacations are behind us. Kids are back to school and adults are back to work. Stress can be a factor in tooth care. How so? Chewing on pencils is a nervous habit for many, brought on by everyday stresses. Beyond the unsanitary nature of putting a pencil or pen in your mouth, chewing on it can stress teeth and gums.
Another stressor to teeth and gums is opening items with your mouth. We rarely give a second thought to opening a bag with our mouth. Some even go so far as to open a ketchup or similar bottle with their teeth. Bad idea!
Remind your patients to care for their teeth and to think twice about oral care every day.
