What dental assistants are telling Dental Assisting Digest about their salaries

Here is your first look at the annual Dental Assisting Digest salary survey. We asked dental assistants around the country to tell us about the salaries and benefits and, so far, 820 have responded. Here is a quick overview of the responses.

The most common hourly salary figures across the country range from $18-$20 (very similar to years past).

When did you last receive a…

Change is going to happen ... are you ready?

It's the first Sunday of August and I'm watching the first NFL exhibition game of the year ... the Hall of Fame Game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Miami Dolphins. My Chicago Bears aren't playing tonight but, hey, it's just nice to see football back on television.

The topic of change has been on my mind for this Editor's Note and an interview with Cris Carter, one of the newest members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, just came on the television. I sat and watched as he talked…

Today, we're all Okies: Thoughts on the May 20 tornado that ravaged Moore, Oklahoma

When you've lived in Oklahoma for your entire life, spring storms are an annual occurrence and rite of passage. You know the storms will come and, from the time you're old enough to understand, you're taught exactly what to do if a tornado approaches. You know where to go in your house (middle room with no exterior walls on the first level) and what to avoid (windows or any other kind of glass, plus anything that could become one of Mother Nature's wind-whipped weapons). You're also taught in… Continue

Who has two thumbs and detests fake leaders? This guy.

As I sat at the Tulsa airport and waited to board my flight to Dallas/Fort Worth, I looked up as the crew began to board the plane and get it ready for takeoff. I smiled when I saw the captain pulling his bag on the plane with a bumper sticker that read, "I have no idea where I'm going."

Of course, it was in jest. He knew exactly where he was going (thank goodness) and he had every tool he needed to make sure the 40-minute flight was smooth and quick (again, thank goodness). I…

March Madness ... a great time for dental work?

Hats off to Dr. Justin Marostica in Oregon for this idea he posted on his blog. I had never put the idea of using your down time after oral surgery to watch the NCAA tournament, but it makes perfect sense. What a great idea to push to your patients!

Raising a glass to honor those who have made a difference in our lives

It’s a big year in the Henry household. My dad turned 70 on Feb. 15, and my parents will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on March 1. Both of those numbers are impressive to me, and I am thankful that my parents are here and in relatively good health so we can celebrate these milestones together.

I talk often about my family in my editor’s notes and there’s a reason for that … family is very important to me. My daughter is an only child. I’m an only…

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain? Then you'll keep wasting your money at dental trade shows

Do you remember the tale of the Great and Powerful Oz? Sure, you may remember how he appeared to Dorothy and her friends once they arrived in the Emerald City, but do you remember how he got there? A simple magician from Kansas, he was blown to Oz in his hot air balloon. Dorothy used a house; he used a balloon. They both ended up over the rainbow.

Once he arrived in Oz, the former sideshow magician was seen as an all-powerful wizard. It wasn't that he had changed, but rather what…

Farting worker charged with "hostile work environment"

Let's be honest. We're all human and we all have gas. It's just a fact of life. People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive? Those Victoria's Secret models? Yep, they let one rip every once in a while.

While it may be in our human nature to pass gas ... or fart ... or make wind ... or whatever you want to call it, rarely do we actually want to smell it coming from someone else. I have friends who have told me horror stories about people farting and then pulling the bed covers over…

Personality makes a difference

There were plenty of vendors at the market by the Rialto Bridge in Venice, Italy, today. There were plenty who had the wares we were looking for, and there were plenty of price points on those wares in the various tents. We had walked around in the rain, and popped in and out of tents, for about 30 minutes before we came across Ivan. With a smile (which I perceived as real, not just plastered on), he welcomed us into his small tent. I looked around and saw some things that appealed to me and… Continue

It's December 21 ... and we're all still here. Now what do we do about it?

It’s December 21, 2012, and I’m sitting at my desk. I’m still here. My friends are still here. The Internet is still working. The lights are still on. I just checked with a friend of mine in Australia and he’s still here (even though the day is almost over for him). I just checked the weather and there are no immediate signs of solar flares or 100-foot waves. I think it’s safe to say that we’ve survived the apocalypse. As one of my friends texted me this morning, this has to be the lamest…

Sickening news

Yesterday, I posted a blog where I mention the overall goodwill that seems to permeate humanity this time of year. Today, I sit at my computer, listening to the news, and growing more sick to my stomach by the moment.

Reports are pouring in from Newtown, Conn., of the deaths of innocent children (a reported 18 as I write this) who were simply attending school on a…

Thoughts as we head into 2013

I can’t help it. I get sentimental this time of year. Part of it is the fact that I do love Christmas and the lights and the overall goodwill that seems to permeate humanity this time of year … but the other part is the thought of one year ending and another year beginning. In my mind, there’s something very definitive about the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve and knowing that the calendar has turned. It’s a time for new hope, new dreams, and a new start. It’s a time when the past can…

Did you attend the 2012 Greater New York Dental Meeting? If so, would you share your thoughts?

I have a 6-question survey about the recent GNYDM at the Javits Center. It should take less than 2 minutes of your time to complete. The survey can be accessed at http://surveymonkey.com/s/2012GNYDM. Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanksgiving shouldn't just be a day; it should be a lifestyle

Thanksgiving has always been, and will always be, one of my favorite holidays. It’s a time for great food, family, and football (you have to love the NFL triple-header). It’s also the kickoff to the holiday season (including all of the fun that Black Friday holds for those of us who like to get up at 3 a.m. to throw elbows with our fellow shoppers … but that’s a whole other diatribe).

Thanksgiving is also that one day that is set aside for us to count our blessings and give…

When a professional baseball player comes to your office...

It's always good to make every patient feel welcome, but this office went overboard when Steve Johnson, a member of the Baltimore Orioles, showed up for his regular appointment. It definitely made an impression on him as you can see in this article from MLB.com.

Thoughts on innovation from Sergio Zyman, the former chief marketing officer of Coca-Cola

Sergio Zyman, the former chief marketing officer for the Coca-Cola Company, recently spoke to the Dental Trade Alliance gathering in Napa, Calif., on "The link between inspiration and renovation." Following are some of his comments he shared with the audience...

At Coke, the company had grown through distribution and progress. We built plants around the world to get Cokes to soldiers in World War II. Pepsi would say, "We are the new generation" and Coke kept growing through… Continue

It doesn't have to be Veterans Day to thank someone for their service

There's a picture in my family's cabin on Grand Lake in northeastern Oklahoma that used to spook me when I was a kid. It's one of those black-and-white photos where the eyes of the man in the picture seem to follow you everywhere you go. My family's cabin has two floors, and the second floor contains the bedrooms. I'd always turn at the top of the steps and look back at that picture and, sure enough, the man would be staring right back at me ... every time. It was a creepy image as I turned the… Continue

I don't care if you're an elephant or a donkey ... just cast your ballot

I have a pretty simple philosophy on life when it comes to politics, religion, and other potentially confrontational topics: I lead my life and you lead yours. I’m about as tolerant as you get when it comes to those topics … as long as you don’t start smothering me with your opinions and telling me I’m wrong to have mine. That’s the beauty of this country … we can all have our own belief system and actually express it whenever and wherever we like. I just don’t like people bashing me over…
