Four out of five patients trust you ... but can you trust them?

Eighty percent of Angie’s List members responding to a recent poll have a high level of trust in their dentists, and they’re not shying away from telling the world about it. But that doesn’t mean they’re actually following the
directions their dentists give them.

What is a relevant product data source in your mind?

3M ESPE's Keith Haig, the company's director of marketing and professional relations, wrote an interesting blog post on which is more important to the dental consumer -- marketing or data? A company like 3M ESPE spends a great deal of money each year on research, but in the end, does that solid research truly resonate with dental professionals?

Take a look at the blog and see what you think...

What if the bad guys won?

I'll admit that I'm one of "those people" who root for the bad guys in films.

Batman or the Joker? Give me Heath Ledger or Jack Nicholson any day (Cesar Romero will work as well).

I want the Road Runner to catch the Coyote.

I pull for Plankton to finally get the Krabby Patty formula on SpongeBob Squarepants.

I think that, if she'd just give him a chance, Gaston would win Belle's heart in Beauty & The Beast.

FYI, tContinue

A generous outreach from the folks at Salvin Dental Specialties

My friend Teresa Duncan recently forward me a link to an article from the Charlotte Observer that discusses the back-to-school program established by Salvin Dental Specialties. In uncertain economic times, it's nice to see a company not only maintain a program, but actually add to it. It reminded me once again how lucky I am to be a part of such a great industry.

A dentist pays the ultimate price in Afghanistan

If you weren't already aware, one of the 10 medical team volunteers who were victims of the Taliban massacre over the weekend in Afghanistan was a dentist who gave up his practice in Colorado to give children free dental care in Afghanistan and Nepal. Dr. Thomas Grams was 51.

Which do you choose: The fear or the goal?

I recently attended one day of my daughter's basketball camp at Oral Roberts University here in Tulsa. She's 12 and she is a pretty darn good player (yes, I'm her dad but she's also made a couple of all-star teams so I think my pride is justified ... mostly). One of the drills she participated in at the ORU camp was a regular layup drill with a twist ... one of the tallest ORU women's players stood by the basket with her arm extended, making it very tough to shoot a layup as the girls normall

Key trends shaping the housing market ... interview with a realtor

With mortgage rates at an all-time low, there are a lot of questions right now about buying and/or selling a house. I recently asked Dennis Breining, a realtor in St. Paul, Minn., (click here for his Web site) for his views on the market and what he thought the future held. After a decade of highs and lows, Breining says the drama is coming to an end in the housing market. Here’s what you need to know to profit in this quieter environment.

The comment I couldn't believe I heard a sales rep say

Recently, I was invited to be a part of a very nice function here in PennWell's hometown of Tulsa, Okla. It was one of those events where dentists, team members, sales representatives, and invited guests milled together and exchanged pleasantries while tasting food and sipping beverages. Yes, it was your typical cocktail party scene.

Since I'm from Tulsa (and I've lived here my entire life), I knew several of the long-time Tulsa dentists who were in attendance at the functio

Words of wisdom from an autistic salutatorian

This is one of those feel-good stories ... and it's also a very simple reminder on the importance of a smile. I appreciate my friend Angie Currans for sharing it with me.

Eric Duquette recently gave the commencement address as the salutatorian of Smithfield High School in Rhode Island. It was an accomplishment because Duquette has battled autism throughout his life. He didn't speak until he was 5, yet the amazing support of his parents, teachers, and classmates t

Way to go, Maine!

I will be the first to admit that I love spending time in Maine. Not only do I have some very close friends there, but it is also one of the most scenic places on Earth (my two cents, for what it's worth). I recently wrote an article about some of the challenges facing the people of Maine when it comes to dental care (

Haiti: Out of sight, out of mind ... but not out of trouble

We're very much a society of caring about "what's hot" then moving on when something else grabs our attention. When a natural disaster strikes, we keep up with what has happened in the region through various news sources, but when they leave, we leave as well. However, for the folks affected in these regions, they can't escape the day-to-day reality of the situation. Such is the case in Haiti.

Recently, Dr. Tobias Bauer of Singen,

Arizona dentist sentenced to prison for failing to file tax returns

I received this in the form of a press release from the IRS. As the attached note said, "It serves as a reminder that taxpayers 'fall out of the system’ for many reasons. However, willful failure to file or pay is a federal crime and may alter your life." Just something to keep in mind...

Arlan R. Turley, 61, of Gilbert, Arizona was recently sentenced in Phoenix by US District Judge Frederick Martone to 18 m

Hats off to another company making a positive impact on the environment

I recently heard about a program by Sharps Compliance Inc., that transforms discarded needles, syringes, lancets and other medical waste into a new product called PELLA-DRX™ – which is used in the manufacture of many types of resources including cement, vital to everything from homes to highways to high-rise buildings. I was pretty impressed with the video, and encourage you to check it outContinue
