What I learned from fact-checking Irene Newman's tombstone

The “Web Weaving” column by Lory Laughter in RDH magazine contains links to a variety of professional resources that are usually helpful. Sometimes, she will mention a website that will be merely fun or amusing to the dental professional.

We kind of forced Lory to be fun with the column that will be appearing in the February 2013 issue. The column kicks off a full year of the magazine’s columnists saying “Happy Birthday, dental hygiene!” since the profession turns 100 years…

Training your new hire dental secretary using Dentrix On-Demand Training

It’s that time again in my practice – time to hire a new secretary.  Oh the joys of interviewing, hiring, orientation and training!

The good news is that we have our hiring process down to a science. Even better news, it’s run by the staff, so the dentists just have to meet and interview the candidates when they’re in for an observation – the staff takes care of…

Pondering romance between Christmas and New Year's Eve

I'm so old that I'm the one who told Robert Browning that he ought to write a poem to Elizabeth Barrett. I'm so old that Cupid practiced his archery with me as one of his first targets.

I'm so old that I have to pause for a minute when reading this article about how credit scores are an important component of contemporary dating.

Back in the day, credit scores were something…

It's December 21 ... and we're all still here. Now what do we do about it?

It’s December 21, 2012, and I’m sitting at my desk. I’m still here. My friends are still here. The Internet is still working. The lights are still on. I just checked with a friend of mine in Australia and he’s still here (even though the day is almost over for him). I just checked the weather and there are no immediate signs of solar flares or 100-foot waves. I think it’s safe to say that we’ve survived the apocalypse. As one of my friends texted me this morning, this has to be the lamest…

Sickening news

Yesterday, I posted a blog where I mention the overall goodwill that seems to permeate humanity this time of year. Today, I sit at my computer, listening to the news, and growing more sick to my stomach by the moment.

Reports are pouring in from Newtown, Conn., of the deaths of innocent children (a reported 18 as I write this) who were simply attending school on a…

Thoughts as we head into 2013

I can’t help it. I get sentimental this time of year. Part of it is the fact that I do love Christmas and the lights and the overall goodwill that seems to permeate humanity this time of year … but the other part is the thought of one year ending and another year beginning. In my mind, there’s something very definitive about the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve and knowing that the calendar has turned. It’s a time for new hope, new dreams, and a new start. It’s a time when the past can…
