Thoughts on innovation from Sergio Zyman, the former chief marketing officer of Coca-Cola

Sergio Zyman, the former chief marketing officer for the Coca-Cola Company, recently spoke to the Dental Trade Alliance gathering in Napa, Calif., on "The link between inspiration and renovation." Following are some of his comments he shared with the audience...

At Coke, the company had grown through distribution and progress. We built plants around the world to get Cokes to soldiers in World War II. Pepsi would say, "We are the new generation" and Coke kept growing through… Continue

It doesn't have to be Veterans Day to thank someone for their service

There's a picture in my family's cabin on Grand Lake in northeastern Oklahoma that used to spook me when I was a kid. It's one of those black-and-white photos where the eyes of the man in the picture seem to follow you everywhere you go. My family's cabin has two floors, and the second floor contains the bedrooms. I'd always turn at the top of the steps and look back at that picture and, sure enough, the man would be staring right back at me ... every time. It was a creepy image as I turned the… Continue

A whole new take on gas in the dental chair

It sounds like the subject of this article did some major tripping when she was given nitrous oxide at her "new and improved L.A. dental office." Actress Gina Gershon, who's had several minor roles in such movies as "Face-Off" and TV shows such as "Curb your Enthusiasm," writes about her "near death" experiences in her new memoir, "In Search of Cleo." (Turns out Cleo is her cat.)…

Tracking production vs. collection in a multi-dentist practice

If you own or manage a multi-dentist practice, then one of your most important responsibilities is to make sure that production and collection are tracked accurately. Nothing wrecks a dentist to dentist relationship faster than financial issues. Even if the issue was an honest mistake, trust is…

I don't care if you're an elephant or a donkey ... just cast your ballot

I have a pretty simple philosophy on life when it comes to politics, religion, and other potentially confrontational topics: I lead my life and you lead yours. I’m about as tolerant as you get when it comes to those topics … as long as you don’t start smothering me with your opinions and telling me I’m wrong to have mine. That’s the beauty of this country … we can all have our own belief system and actually express it whenever and wherever we like. I just don’t like people bashing me over…

Is it ever wrong to quit chewing tobacco? Nolan Ryan thinks so.

OK, maybe Ryan, the baseball Hall of Famer, doesn't think it's wrong to quit chewing tobacco, but he certainly doesn't seem very pleased that one of his star players chose to quit in the middle of the season.

Josh Hamilton, an All-Star outfielder for the Texas Rangers (Ryan's former team and the team for which he currently serves as president), made the decision to kick his tobacco habit during the 2012 baseball season. Ryan said his decision to quit had a "drastic effect" on…

Christina Applegates emergency dental surgery discussed on Jay Leno

For those of you who missed it, Christina Applegate, from one of my favorite shows "Up All Night" and formerly of "Married with Children," had to have emergency dental surgery a few days ago. Poor thing was minding her own business on the set when "her tongue felt weird." She felt in the back of her mouth and noticed that half of one of her molars was missing, and it hurt like crazy.

“My tooth broke, my molar, half of it just left," she said with a laugh.

She told…

Your dental practice can receive $63,250 from the government for using an electronic health record

I heard of some dentists receiving government grant money just for using an electronic health record and thought - we use Dentrix, we send e-claims - that counts, so how can my practice receive this money? This sounded like an urban myth (thar's gold in them there hills) to me, so I did some digging at the Dentrix Business of Dentistry Conference. Here's what I discovered:

It's true

Yes, the government really is giving dentists money for using electronic records. This…
