Dental Patient Anxiety; How To Relieve Patient Anxiety

Dental patient anxiety It is estimated that as many as 75% of US adults experience some degree of dental fear, from mild to severe.Approximately 5 to 10 percent of U.S. adults are considered to experience dental phobia; that is, they are so fearful of receiving dental treatment that they avoid dental care at all costs. Many dentally fearful people will only seek dental care when they have a dental emergency, such…

Which Image Management Software Should I Choose?

Many practices are considering or are already on their way to becoming a paperless, digital practice.  When going paperless in your practice there is a laundry list of items that you need to research before taking the plunge into digital.  One concern that comes up amongst dentists looking to go digital is,

"What imaging software will work with my practice management software?"

This is an important question to ask…

Dental Anxiety: What the Dentist Could Do to Help the Patient

Dental anxiety seems to be an increasing phenomenon these days. A lot of people do suffer from dental phobia or fear of dentist and dental work, most especially the kids. And I never exclude myself to dental phobic children. When I was a kid, I never received any dental treatment because having a dental checkup is always among my greatest fears. I constantly feel the tension, during my young age, each time I see a dentist in white lab coats or medical scrubs at the same time holding dental…

Love sweets? Then chances are you're sweet

As one who loves me some cake, pie, and cookies, I found a new study fascinating. U.S. scientists have linked a person's sweet tooth to his or her personality. They concluded that people with a sweet tooth are more likely to be friendly and agreeable as opposed to neurotic and extroverted.

I say we just go with these results. Next time I'm caught with my hand in the cookie jar, I plan to exclaim, "Hey, I'm much more likely to volunteer or help a person in need, and I'm not neurotic."…

Successful root canal on a Siberian tiger

Very impressive. Dr. Doug Luiten performed a root canal on a Siberian tiger last Thursday. That's impressive from a lot of angles, including the size of the patient (7-feet long, 300 pounds) and the size of the patient's tooth (a 3-inch canine), the longest tooth Dr. Luiten has ever worked on.

The endodontist from Anchorage was the first dentist to perform surgery in the Alaska Zoo's new operating room. Surprisingly, root canals on animals is fairly common, but at this zoo they've…

Why Go Apple In A Dental Practice And Then Run Windows?

Could someone explain to me why you would pay the high price for an apple computer and then buy a windows operating system to put on it? What would be the advantage of this? Despite popular belief the components in the systems are not manufactured by apple they are just assembled by apple. Meaning you could get the same or better components in other systems.

I know everyone says that apples are more reliable and maybe that is partially true if you are running an Apple OS that…

Why Should You Go Digital In Your Practice?

I frequent the dental town message boards and was posed an interesting question after asking one myself.  A Dr had mentioned that he has the digital over film discussion  a lot and that he couldn't justify spending the money to outfit his practice since he didn't think he would see a return on it.  So I informed him that with our technology solution and staff training our doctors see a production increase of at least 15% within their practice and that the practices are able to cover the cost…

Untapped Revenue: How to Reactivate Patients in a Dental Practice

How do we fill the holes in our schedule? Many of our clients have expressed concerns about the inconsistencies of their patient schedules. While there are many challenges that practices face in this uncertain economy, there is a potential resource of revenue that is often untapped in practices.

Who is over due?

When was the last time you audited your charts and reviewed the key computer reports, including the past due recall report, the missed appointments report, and…

Lindsay Lohan will not go away

I thought Lindsay Lohan had finally left the celebrity scene. She should leave the celebrity scene and try to pull her crazy life together. But I guess there's no money in that. Of course, whenever she makes an appearance the media have a field day with her, and last week was no exception, when their attention was drawn to her yellowed teeth.

I don't follow her enough to realize just how bad her teeth had gotten, but wow, they were gross. Speculation is that she is so…

What to do with old equipment after going digital

We have been having a lot of my clients come to me with the issue of getting rid of their old working equipment when they make the move to digital.

There are a whole bunch of options and few of them work well.

Craigslist, Ebay, Hoping and Praying and donating.

I know of lots of offices that have tried all four options. The problem in most cases is the dentist does not have time to sit around answering the constant craigslist and ebay…

Electronic Sig Pads: Can a Signature Be Forged?

Did you know that a Topaz signature pad does much more than just capture a signature?

Signature pads are becoming more and more common in dental practices, especially due to the Electronic Records Mandate that is soon to come.  I was posed with an interesting question today that I had never before thought to ask, “If…

Keep It Super Simple: A Dental Technology Integrator's Mantra

Nothing is more frustrating for a dental technology integrator like myself than going into a new network that is just a complete mess. I just did a basic install of some digital x-ray sensors in an office that already had prof.suni and dentrix. As I am going through the workstations loading drivers I see that windows firewall is on, anti virus real time scan is on with no exclusions set, and the current IT guy has like 5 mapped drives all mapping multiple ways to get to the same location. It…

Top 7 Reasons A Good Backup Solution Is Necessary

Broken Hard Drive

1. Redundancy:Redundancy will allow you to sleep well at night knowing that no matter what happens, your patient information is safe and secure and can be recovered within a day or two and have your practice up and running without issue.

2. Selective Recovery:Having rotating backups allows you to have a backup for every day of the week for…

Week 1 - Digital Intra Oral X-Ray Sensors - The Good The Bad And The Ugly - Part 1

The topic is Digital Intra Oral X-Ray Sensors

-A device with either a CCD or CMOS sensor (just like in your digital camera except bigger) and then a coding or solid filter that converts X-rays to light that the sensor can read. Some medical digital X-Ray uses a specially charged plate that can read the X-ray directly without conversion. I do not believe any company is currently using this technology in dental.

I don't intend to go into great…

Police in Florida have arrested a pawn shop owner and two employees after investigators found more than $3 million worth of stolen dental hygiene products as part of an organized theft ring.
