In an era where companies are trying to gain an edge in marketing to current and potential customers, did three companies go too far in their recent dental claims? According to the FDA, yes.
Recently, the FDA sent warning letters to Johnson & Johnson (Listerine Total Care Anticavity Mouthwash), CVS Corporation (CVS Complete Care Anticavity Mouthwash), and Walgreen Company (Walgreen Mouth Rinse Full Action). According to the ADA, "each of the products in question lists… Continue

Well, I'm happy to report that Carl the dentist, played by John Stamos (Uncle Jesse on Full House), should give dentists a good name. He's passionate about his profession and helping teens toward good oral health, not to mention he's fun to look at.
The character Santana declared, "You're hot." Carl replied, "I get that a lot."
He's invited to visit the Glee Club to discuss oral hygiene, and he gives the kids plaque disclosing tablets to chew that turns their plaque blue. The… Continue

Celebrities are under a lot of pressure to look their best. As we mere mortals know, many of them have undergone several plastic surgery procedures to retain their "youthful" looks. Their teeth are no exception. Thanks to celebrities and the popularity of Extreme Makeover, smile makeovers and teeth whitening have become very popular.
While many of the attached images have been around for quite some time, they never seem to get old. The most surprising is the first, Tom… Continue

The bad news is that a contestant on America's Next Top Model agreed to have the gap in her front teeth WIDENED. In fact she said, "Make it as big as you want!"
The good news is that the comments submitted are almost 100% in disagreement with this crazy stunt. Some who commented even wonder what sort of dentist would agree to do such a thing. So it would appear that America as a whole is enough dentally aware to understand that messing with one's teeth in an irreversible… Continue

Here's an early look at John Stamos as a dentist named Carl on Glee. Hearing the words "root canal" haven't ever been quite so enjoyable. He's serious about dental hygiene and teenagers, and wants to give a seminar on good oral health at the school. His demonstration of "gummy" is pretty fun to… Continue

"Friends" star and Brad Pitt''s ex Jennifer Aniston's latest role as a sexually-voracious dentist has been announced. According to People Magazine, she'll play "a conniving, oversexed dentist in 2011's 'Horrible Bosses.'"
Other entertainment sites believe it will be a nice break from her usual rom com movies such as The Break Up and The Switch. I'm wondering what kind of name it will give one of the fastest growing professional groups in America -- female dentists.
Aniston will join…

has pioneered a new way of keeping hygiene schedules full and communicating effectively with dental patients. Many practices rely on automated messaging services to communicate with their patients about appointments and patient recare. This poses a problem for many patients that are too busy to call and schedule an appointment.

Recently I talked with a dental student from the University of Kentucky. He has some interesting thoughts that I would like to share. He is a very accomplished student in his third year after a stellar undergrad stint at an ivy league school. This guy is BRIGHT!!! I don't have his permission to use his name, so I will call him Tom.
Tom and I spoke for over an hour about what he wanted to do when he got out. Tom is not sure what he wants to do... if the right opportunity comes along,… Continue
