A Reminder - What's Good for the Patient, is Good for Business

Our general dentist continues to do well in this time of continuing economic crisis that causes many to put dental care on the back burner behind more pressing needs like mortgage payments, car repair bills, groceries, etc. He considers all the cards with his patients - what's best for them and how he can best help them obtain the most necessary care. This includes consideration of the reality of finances, which really make or break a treatment plan, however wise the plan may be.…

It's Hump Day in the Only Free Dental Clinic in Town.......

A little late in the week, but wanted to repost this blog post from a few years ago, because in all honesty, nothing has changed since then, except we have more people in need....

Well, it's hump day, and I'm busy trying to secure grant funds for a free dental clinic, in fact, the only free dental clinic in the county. This clinic serves the homeless, and recently added the same services for the uninsured, working-poor of the community through a…

Patient Safety in the Dentist’s Office

A few months ago a story broke about a dentist’s office in Oklahoma that CNN reported has been called a “perfect storm” for infections. Health investigators say about 7,000 patients who visited this particular dentist in the past six years may have been exposed to HIV and hepatitis. Some of the more violations brought up before the state dental board include “multiple sterilization…

Gain more new patients: Know your numbers

Grow from your past success

Every dentist I know would like more new patients. So - how do you that? First, you have to know your numbers. Find out which marketing programs have been most successful for you, and which ones are the losers so you can make solid decisions based on real numbers. It's so easy to get sold by the latest marketing idea - "Dr. you can be the first in your area to have a mobile website!" but you need to know what's working for you.

In this brief…

Choosing the right mouthwash to meet your needs

These days many people like to use a mouthwash and there is a huge range of options to choose from.
The key to choosing the right one for your needs is being clear about what you are using it for.
Many people opt for mouthwash because they want to have fresh breath.
But many mouthwashes contain alcohol which can cause the mouth to dry. It’s best to minimize the chances of suffering from dry mouth as it can increase your risk of tooth decay…

What dental assistants are telling Dental Assisting Digest about their salaries

Here is your first look at the annual Dental Assisting Digest salary survey. We asked dental assistants around the country to tell us about the salaries and benefits and, so far, 820 have responded. Here is a quick overview of the responses.

The most common hourly salary figures across the country range from $18-$20 (very similar to years past).

When did you last receive a…

Famous folks at the dentist

I couldn't pass up a chance to share the link I found on Twitter today — celebrity photos at the dentist.

Granted, they aren't huge names, but the photos do include Conan O'Brien, whose dentist told him he "only had a week to live." (Not really) And Paris Hilton, who says she got "bad anesthesia" when having her wisdom teeth pulled last May. Remember when Demi Moore lost a front tooth? I don't either, but this photo reminded me that she posted a pic of herself missing a front tooth,…

Make it visual: How to increase dentist efficiency

X               /

/               X                    X

Does this look familiar? Columns of X's, /'s and blanks to communicate exactly where the dentist is throughout the day. And, since we can preset our appointments to include X  X  /  /  /  - don't we end up ignoring all these marks anyway?

The dentist instructs the front desk team "Fill the…

Dental Marketing- 13 Ways To Get More Patient Online Reviews

I don’t usually do this, but let’s get theoretical about dental marketing for just a second:

Every satisfied patient of yours should bring you more patients, right?  The ideal is for word-of-mouth to do all the work—for your happy patients to refer their friends and family to you, who in turn become patients.

But what if you’re not quite at that stage?  No …

Rihanna sports grill to end all grill#s

It's the second set of celebrity teeth to catch my attention in the last two days! Fun! This time it's Rihanna, and she's not quite the wholesome young thing that Taylor Swift and her chipped tooth are.

No, Rihanna has a new grill. In keeping with the celebrity teeth bling trend, Rihanna is sporting a new gold grill. Don't know how much you follow celebrity "news" (I confess I read People religiously), but Rihanna has caused a bit of a stir as a new mother. What kind of example is she…

What to do when the dentist is out of the office?

It never happens. The dentist is never sick.

But it did - and unexpectedly, the dentist cannot come into work today. So, now what do we do?

This is a great conversation for your next staff meeting. Even though you haven't missed a day of work in 27 years, you never know what might come up tomorrow that keeps you from seeing your patients. In fact, you…

Taylor Swift says she won't repair chipped tooth

It's been a while since I've talked celebrity on the DIQ community site. But I could not pass up a chance to talk about Taylor Swift and her chipped tooth. My first thought is, "Really? An overflowing bank account and you aren't going to visit your dentist to have your chipped tooth fixed?" Will her dentist recommend that she fix the tooth?

Miss Swift may have to explain that one to me. But my chances of getting an interview with her when she passes through Tulsa tomorrow are slim to…

Change is going to happen ... are you ready?

It's the first Sunday of August and I'm watching the first NFL exhibition game of the year ... the Hall of Fame Game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Miami Dolphins. My Chicago Bears aren't playing tonight but, hey, it's just nice to see football back on television.

The topic of change has been on my mind for this Editor's Note and an interview with Cris Carter, one of the newest members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, just came on the television. I sat and watched as he talked…
