A writer's vow

The rotunda in the convention area lies in front of me. In approximately six hours, RDH Under One Roof starts. I will be long gone from this chair. A registration staffer will be sitting in it, getting dental hygienists squared away for the annual dental hygiene conference. Instead, I will probably be out in the hall, looking for old and new friends in the profession. (Say hello if you see me.)

The Rio has a "free shuttle." The Rio is not on the Las Vegas Strip. The free shuttle is a… Continue

Photos for Dental Practice Marketing: A Task for your Office Manager

As dental practice marketing completely transforms from the simple (run a few ads in the yellow pages) to the complex (update your website and regularly contribute to social media), photographs are becoming more and more important to your practice.  There are a variety of photos that can be useful in dental marketing:

  • Clinical pictures – for case presentations and…

Ryan Lochte is proud of his patriotic grill

One proud U.S. Gold Medalist must have one very proud dentist. He's causing quite a stir with his flashy mouth bling.

Swimmer Ryan Lockte has been showing off grills for quite some time at different swimming events, but one in particular caught the attention of the world this weekend -- his red, white, and blue diamond encrusted grill that he had made especially for the Olympics, and displayed while holding up his Gold Medal from the 400-meter Individual Medley. See the slide show…

How to train your dental office manager

Thank you to all who attended my presentation From Office Manager to Administrator: Managing a Growing Multi-Provider Practice. I appreciate everyone who stuck with me as we reviewed scheduling, managing goals/bonuses and quality care/financial performance all at 3:30-5:30pm on Saturday afternoon – in Las Vegas!

As I was thinking about my presentation, I realize that…

Thoughts after the Colorado theater shooting: We can't live in fear of "what ifs"

I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.

“Do you think it’s safe?”

This was the question from my 14-year-old daughter when I asked her if she wanted to go see “The Dark Knight Rises” with me this past weekend. It’s a question…

Bad publicity for dental surgery, Sage Stallone's death

I extend my sympathy to the Sylvester Stallone family on the death of their son, Sage. I can never, never imagine losing a child. Can't even wrap my brain around it. So I can sort of understand why Sage's mother, Sasha Czack, would be searching for a reason for her 36-year-old son's mysterious death.

In interviews she's saying it could be due to the dental surgery (extraction of five teeth) he had two weeks previously. As though people don't dread dental surgery enough, let's suggest…

Dentist featured on "Tanked"

If it hadn't been for a lazy Saturday afternoon at home with my 12-year-old son, I would never have learned about Dr. Joe Vitagliano and his monster shark tank that graces the reception area of his West Bay Orthodontics and Associates office in New York.

Wow! Is it a beauty. At 18 feet long, it contains 2,000 gallons of water, and weighs in at 10 tons. And it literally is a shark tank, with several types of sharks, eels, stingrays, and fish. And let's not forget the dental props. The…

How to hit your financial goals (and run your dental practice)

We’re halfway through 2012. Are you on track to hit your financial goals?

If your first response is “Financial goals? What financial goals? How am I supposed to have time to set financial goals when I’m busy working at the chair?” then, I’ve got a plan for you.

Or, if your response is “Financial goals? Of course, I’ve already reviewed my numbers to see how I’m doing compared to last year. It sure would be nice to hear some ideas on how we could improve our…
