A comment on systems:

System are useless if the staff do not follow through. Getting staff willingly following through is what leadership is all about.

What practice owners are missing is not how to confirm an appointment (or whatever) but how to be effective leaders who attract willing staff with a half way decent worth ethic, IQ and responsibility level.

If you can accomplish that then just about any system will work. It's all about surrounding yourself with willing,…

Automated Patient Communication Systems:

We find that the old timers still prefer postcards but as the population ages more and more people are requesting text and to a lesser degree email.

For reminders/confirmations I recommend 3-3-1: Three weeks, three days one day. That being said you can't be rote. Ideally your FD knows the patients well enough to customize reminder schedules. For example I never miss an appointment so I prefer just one text reminder a couple…

Perfect Stroke – Dental Instrument Sharpening

Perfect Stroke – Dental Instrument Sharpening

We have talked about the sharpening aids built into the dental instrument sharpeners from New Edge Technologies. We’ve also discussed the importance of the set up position for the instrument’s face (see previous blog). Now, let us move to another important point, the sharpening stroke.

Automatic recall/reactivation systems are amazing but it's important not to get too automatic. Here is what we are now finding that generally works best:

1. Find out from patients whether they prefer to be contacted by text, email or phone call. Do not offer a postcard. Only use a postcard if the patient requests it.

2. The basic schedule for confirmation is three weeks, three days and one day unless the patient tells you differently…

Parallel Lines of Scaler & Curette Sharpening

Keep The Faces Parallel

The sharpeners from New Edge Technologies have a unique patented design that eliminates the most common errors that occur when sharpening curettes and scalers. However, there are still things that need to be considered in order to produce and re-produce a proper edge. One is the position of the face of the instrument. The face needs to be parallel to the work surface top. When you have the face parallel, the shank and/or handle of site specific instruments will…
