I like the title

I like the sounds of "The Chic Shopaholic," a website that I have nothing in common with. I'm not chic. I'm not a shopaholic ... yet. But the site recently offered an insightful article about cosmetic dentistry. Yes, cosmetic dentistry is about looking good and "chic," but it's also about increasing self esteem and living a fuller life. I know "selling" dentistry can be a touchy subject, but if a procedure will truly make a… Continue

Before and after cosmetic photos

Some interesting thoughts are shared in this short article.

I haven't noticed this happening very often in the before and after photos I've observed, but if "doctoring" of photos does occur, it can be very misleading. I think it's a good idea to keep the photos honest, as suggested in this article. That way people can truly observe that "ordinary" people, which most of us are, can… Continue

Of dogs and oral health

I came across a couple of interesting articles. The first one is for you dog lovers. Even man's best friend needs to maintain good oral health. So feed, walk, groom ... and brush your dog's teeth. But I bet those of you with canine friends already knew this. Me? I'm a cat lover, and I confess, I haven't explored my cats' mouths lately. Don't plan to either.

I also came across Martin and his "Friends of Fresh Breath." I like his thoughts on oral health. He… Continue

Put yourself in the shoes of a dental practice management consultant. What would you look for if you were a management consultant to a dental practice whose production and collections were going down each month? How could each person in the office be the cause of a failing dental practice?

Perhaps the front office people are being rude or not answering the phone in a reasonable length of time. Perhaps the scheduling is not being done correctly. Look at each position in the office and… Continue

What Are Your Staff Really Up To?

I often talk to clients about the importance of role-playing with staff but that may not be enough. Just because you showed someone how to do it once, doesn’t mean they will continue to follow the procedures you’ve shown them.

I have a client who thoroughly role-plays new staff members on their job duties until they have their procedures down to perfection but then he didn’t follow up on them until a few months later. Instead he assumed that they were doing the job the way he had… Continue

Do you ask your patient "Do you understand?"

If you do, you're losing a lot of income. That's what all dentists do.

Dentists tell patients they need to do this, this and this, rapid-fire style, throw patients terms that they probably don’t understand like "leaky margins" and then says, “Any questions?”

So the patients go merrily along their way to the financial arranger and ask what procedure will their insurance cover and then say, “Okay that's what I want to… Continue
