Refractory Gingivitis

That's not a typo. Refractory gingivitis is not a concept, it is a clinical condition we see every day in our offices. The definition of refractory is: resistant to treatment or cure, How does repetitive gingivitis not fit this definition? Of course it does, but we don't recognize it as such. Why is the term refractory reserved only for periodontitis? By the time a patient gets to refractory periodontitis they are at the end of a losing battle, not all the time, but certainly not…

How one dentist in Minnesota uses his Web site

Note from Kevin Henry: I recently had the chance to speak with Dr. Raymond Hellickson, one of the dentists at Advanced Dental Group in St. Anthony Village, between Minneapolis and St. Paul. His Web site can be found by clicking here, and I wanted to ask him about some of the ways he and his practice use the…

Who Has Time for a Morning Huddle?

A morning huddle could be the most powerful 10 minutes you spend each day. A doctor not having a morning huddle is equivalent to a college football coach not having a plan for game day. Can you imagine if the coach of your favorite football team recruited the best talent in the country then just assumed they knew what to do? No getting back to fundamentals, no practicing, no pregame speeches, no halftime adjustments. Just an attitude of expectancy that “they were trained in…

Add a "Make an appointment" button to your Facebook page

We all know that a Facebook business page is a great marketing tool for any practice. A call to action is also an important part of any online presence. I always suggest adding a "Make an appointment now" link to any website.

This is a quick tutorial showing you how to add a "Make and appointment now" button to your Facebook page that links to your online appointment scheduler.

We will be using FBML which is short for Facebook Markup… Continue

Isn't Facebook supposed to be fun?

I got a big kick out of my colleague's article, "Nine things you should never do on Facebook."

Go ahead and read it. I'll wait for you to come back.

For the longest time, Kevin Henry and I used to be neighbors in the ol' office. Recently, they moved him two cubicles down, make a left, and he's the first door on…

Social and Professional networking !

Professional and social networking are becoming more in sync it seems. They seems to bounce off each other in everyday life now. The good news is that it has equalled more exposure in less costly ways of doing things in the past. Many sites (such as my favorit are free and very interactive. After networking for 12 years in the dental industry and specifically social networking the past few years, it has great benefits thus far. It seems to broaden the mind in such a mechanical… Continue

The growing relationship between sleep apnea and dentistry

I'm sitting at McCarran International Airport here in Las Vegas, listening to the hum of the slot machines and thinking back on the symposium I just attended at the Green Valley Ranch, sponsored by the Appliance Therapy Practitioners Association (ATPA). I was in Vegas for a little more than 24 hours, with the majority of that time spent at the symposium or with people who had attended the meetings.

The biggest thought I took away from this meeting is the growing potential for…

Discoveries of a Mystery Patient

Over the past year Jameson has provided a “mystery patient” service to our clients. In a nutshell, we call in as a prospective new patient and participate in a new patient call with the business administrator. Throughout the call we are evaluating the level of customer service, whether they are implementing communication skills taught to them by their Jameson coach and if they are gathering the appropriate information – and are able to lead that caller to the optimal end result – scheduling…

Sick of Social Media?

I have been reading many posts about social media lately, and most of them have been very positive. However some prove that the may be a bit of a social media meltdown occurring. I think doctors are being bombarded with “Social Media” and it may be too much for some people. These are the same people who are probably wondering why they can’t get the web address they want. The fact is, any dentist who wants to be found on the Internet needs…

What dentists can learn from the Mayo Clinic about social media like Twitter, Facebook, blogs and YouTube

Mayo is doing a fantastic job of leveraging social and traditional media efforts to communicate with doctors, patients, the public and researchers. Here is the first of two blog posts I am writing about their successes. (The second is coming soon).

Kicking opporutnity in the teeth ... just don't do it

So how are the public relations aspects of your practice? How are your fellow team members talking about your practice when they're at the grocery store, church, softball field, or any other social activity? You may love everything about your practice. You may think everything is great about your practice, and you want to tell the entire world how great things are ... but what about your coworkers? What if they're doing more damage than you're doing good?

The old phrase "loose lips… Continue

How expensive is a data breach?

"I do not see why making a notification should involve anything more than an e-mail at almost zero cost. I have never heard of a HIPAA fine for a stolen computer. That is urban myth territory." - Dr. Larry Emmott, March 2, 2010
