Manage ‘problem patients’ by using your ledger

“Mrs. Jones didn’t pay her bill again.”

“Mr. Johnson didn’t show up for his appointment.”

Problem patients – every dental practice has them. Patients that don’t pay their bills on time or at all. Patients that cancel appointments last minute or just plain don’t show up. Denture patients that come in 40 times for an adjustment. Ortho patients that…

9-year-old best actress nominee Quvenzhané Wallis wants to be a dentist

What advice would you give a budding 9-year-old actress who actually wants to be a dentist? Go for it? Stick with the acting?

She can obviously be an actress now, as opposed to becoming a dentist after years and years of schooling, and often, debt. But if she stays on the dental path, she'll at least have the money to go to dental school and avoid accumulating debt. That's assuming that her parents invest her windfall from "Beasts of the Southern Wild" well. I believe I read…

LeAnn Rimes claims poor dental work stalled her career, sues dentist

Country singer LeAnn Rimes filed a lawsuit for unspecified damages against her former dentist, Duane C. McKay, on Valentine's Day. Numerous online articles have given her side of the story, including one on DentistryIQ.

http://www.dentistryiq.com/news/2013/02/15/leann-rimes-sues-dentist.html

I hope we hear Dr. McKay's side of this soon, but my guess is that he'll stay out of the…

Raising a glass to honor those who have made a difference in our lives

It’s a big year in the Henry household. My dad turned 70 on Feb. 15, and my parents will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on March 1. Both of those numbers are impressive to me, and I am thankful that my parents are here and in relatively good health so we can celebrate these milestones together.

I talk often about my family in my editor’s notes and there’s a reason for that … family is very important to me. My daughter is an only child. I’m an only…

Letter to the Editor – AGD Magazine

To my knowledge, this was never published by AGD Magazine. So, I thought I'd submit it here instead.

Dear Editor,

In response to Dr. W. Carter Brown’s guest editorial ‘Dental Care as a Commodity’ I understand the sentiment of a senior dentist (solo practitioner?) observing the challenges of private practice in today’s day and age. The challenges are many: a struggling economy has affected every dentist I know, dental marketing is completely different than 5 years ago –…

5 Reasons Why Social Media Is Important for Dentists

Written by Rachel Cunningham

Your next patient is on Facebook, are you? If you have been debating about whether to engage in social media for your dental practice, the statistics regarding Facebook and other social sites may surprise you. Facebook has over a billion users, Twitter has 517 million users, Google+ has 400 million users, and LinkedIn has 175 million users (MediaBistro, Jan 2013).

Patients in your community are using Facebook, Twitter and Google+ everyday to follow…

Ginnifer Goodwin gets behind Listerine

Listerine and Oral Health America have landed a celebrity spokeswoman in Ginnifer Goodwin, the pixie-haircut woman currently known for her role as Snow White on "Once Upon a Time." (Frankly I preferred her as Gigi in "He's Just Not That Into You," but I digress.)

The point is that she will help draw attention to the cause of dental care for children in need. In an interview with HollywoodLife.com, Goodwin said, "I did not know the number-one chronic illness among children is…

A bit of post Grammy news with Faith Hill

This country singer was not shy about letting the world know she wears braces, and why, at last night's Grammy Awards. Yay for her!

Apparently Faith Hill didn't wear her retainers as a girl, and as a result she needs braces today, she recently told a radio station. But she's unfazed by her new accessory, smiling widely for the cameras, a wonderful statement for those considering braces but who are on the fence about the big move.

"Kids, wear your retainer!" the mother of…

Best celebrity smiles

The poll results are in. The best celebrity smiles have been voted on and announced! Water Pik had a fun idea during Hollywood awards season to survey consumers to determine "which celebrities merited a well-deserved award for best smile," according to the survey publicity. Over two days in January, 1,500 Americans replied to the Water Pik poll, “You Be the Judge: Celebrity Smiles.”

The winners? Individual smiles went to Jennifer Lopez and Denzel Washington. Best couple? I'll make you…

More Efficient Scheduling with a Customized Appointment Book View

What does your appointment book look like? Is it easy to see your hygienist's next opening? Can you quickly see when your dentist has a half hour available to fit in an emergency exam?

Most dentists never change the appointment book view from the day they install their dental practice management software. The default setup includes all providers on one page and…
