Wonderful; I'm glad someone is paying attention. Of course you are absolutely correct. I think the mouthwash manufacturers should include a couple of paragraphs of fine print on the label that explains the limitations of their product. You know the…

Most of the pathogens are anaerobes..cannot live in the presence of oxygen. They are in the sulcus (thus the need for flossing, floss picks, etc.) or surrounded by those that can survive in oxygen. The biofilm communicate with each other..live very…

So do all the ADA-accepted mouthwashes kill only the pathogenic bacteria and spare the beneficial varieties? If so, how do they differentiate among them? Have any studies been done on that? And, if 99.9 percent of germs are killed (assuming that's n…

There are only about twenty-five or so pathogens in the oral cavity. This is not new information; nor is the concept of beneficial bacteria new. The balance of bacteria in the mouth, as all environments, is very important. Historically, destroying t…

We are in a brave new world of beneficial germs, and it is fascinating. All of my life, the emphasis has been on eradicating ALL germs -- we were on a mission to disinfect the world. We eagerly bought aerosols and mouthwashes that "Kills germs on co…

You didn't mislead me. I agree with you. If a journalist is stumped for an angle on a news story about dentistry, we can always count on them dredging up Little Shop of Horrors.

I think a more scary clarification to the above is that 70% have rejected job applicants based on what they see on social media sites. It doesn't matter how closely your resume matches the job. If you obviously had too good of a time at Cousin Joe's…

Time for kids to use probiotics?

Several companies produce probiotics for the oral environment. Recently, Oragenics Inc. introduced a probiotic for children, EvoraKids, which offers a different probiotic blend than the adult product known as EvoraPlus.

Dr. Jeffrey Hillman, the chief scientific officer at Oragenics, developed both products. Dr. Hillman
is the company’s founder, a project initiated after 25 years of research on caries and other oral disea

Web site offers service that may be a preview of how electronic health records work

Two factors have shaped my early reactions to required electronic health records. Olivia Wann’s article in RDH eVillage, “What’s New with HIPAA,” is still the second
most viewed article on DentistryIQ.com. In addition, some members of the dental

community, most notably Texas dentist Darrell Pruitt, hav

The IFDH, final day

The final two days of the International Federdation of Dental Hygienists in Glasgow, Scotland, have been wall-to-wall seminars, generally lasting about one hour each. The speakers are primarily from the United Kingdom. But a few Americans have been sprinkled here and there, including my colleague from IneedCE.com, Fiona Collins. But Fiona, now a Colorado resident, is a native of Scotland.

The presentations were interrupted by the meeting's gala dinner last night. All of the IFD

The IFDH, first day

The flag ceremony at the International Federation of Dental Hygienists meeting certainly pales next to the Olympics. I'm sure a similar presentation by an international community of dentists would be just as grand, if not overwhelming in comparison.

You have to be a devoted follower of dental hygiene, I guess, to feel the pride of watching the home flags of dental hygienists being paraded down the aisle at the opening ceremony of the IFDH. It's rewarding to observe the professi

Isn't Facebook supposed to be fun?

I got a big kick out of my colleague's article, "Nine things you should never do on Facebook."

Go ahead and read it. I'll wait for you to come back.

For the longest time, Kevin Henry and I used to be neighbors in the ol' office. Recently, they moved him two cubicles down, make a left, and he's the first door on t

You're not going to believe this, but I visited your MySpace page for a second the other day. I clicked on the link in Kevin's forum discussion "Are you on Facebook? MySpace...". I was scanning through your answers to the questions and noticed that Kevin and I were the last people to have made you laugh. Good to know! :-)

Hi Mark,

Here is the website with some info on volunteering. I know they are often in need of Dentists to volunteer. This would be my first time for me. The application deadline is Aug 8th for the Jan09 trip. I have had colleagues go and although exhausting it sounded so rewarding.
Good Luck-Liliana

Sounds great, Mark. I will definitely spread the word. Do we have to sign up for the course ahead of time or is it considered a general session?
