Your treatment plan is showing ;)

We are seeing more and more ‘dental shoppers’ in our practice these days. Coming in for a second opinion because the first dentist recommended a significant treatment plan and they want to compare what we think. Patients bring in the treatment plan from the other practice and after we give our recommendations, they share it with us. I see London, I see France, I see Aspen’s treatment plan! Recognizing that this is a new trend – what does your treatment plan look like? Dentrix allows me to…See More

Keeping everyone on the same page in a multi-dentist practice

The main role of an administrator in a multiple dentist group practice is that of communication. Each dentist wants to know what’s going on and no one likes to feel they are out of the loop. In a busy, multiple dentist practice, this is no small trick! One of my keys to communication is having regular meetings with an agenda. Just like a dentist wouldn’t walk into a treatment room without the…See More

Setting up a new dentist in the Dentrix schedule

In my practice, we are thrilled to be adding a third GP dentist. With our 4 specialists, this will make 7 dentists under one roof! One of the most important pieces of helping our new dentist get settled into the practice is setting up his schedule in Dentrix. Each of our dentists has his or her own page in the Dentrix appointment book. Our secretary training includes the list of each dentist and which F key to use to find their schedule. To give you a sense of how we have this organized for our…See More

More thoughts on Embezzlement

I had the pleasure of having breakfast with Mr. David Harris of Prosperident while we were both attending the Chicago MidWinter dental meeting. He shared some seriously scary stories over coffee and definitely established himself as the dental embezzlement expert. Here’s what I learned:There’s no way to be perfectly safe from theft. Criminals are smart and they know how dental practices operate. The average amount stolen from dentists is $157,000. Ouch.Setting up systems in the practice like…See More

Online Marketing + Well-Trained Dental Staff = Success!

I am super excited about my dental practice’s new marketing venture: Google Adwords.  This program allows you to run ads on Google that show up when people search for the keywords you select so they can discover your business and become your customer. For the first time in years, I am feeling like I have struck gold for dental marketing programs! The logic of this advertising approach makes so much sense because it is targeted marketing to people who are actually looking for a dentist.Just…See More

"I think you are spot-on about the importance of ROI. You are right that the popularity of YP is declining, but you reinforce the critical point that many dentists don't pay attention to -- don't spend your hard-earned advertising dollars…"

Yellow Pages – still a reasonable advertising option?

It’s that time of year – in the last 10 days I’ve received 2 different yellow pages directories found lying on my doorstep. Yellow pages advertising used to be the primary  focus of my marketing budget. About 5 years ago, our practice ran a full page ad in at least 3 different books and a smaller size ad in 2 additional books. Oh, how times have changed! If you are trying to decide whether to keep or eliminate yellow pages from your marketing budget, here are some suggestions:Establish a…See More

Give up $37 to receive $240: A lesson in collections

I took a call just yesterday from a patient upset at the $75 fee to replace her son's ortho retainer. Her son recently got his braces off, came in for the appointment to make the retainer, but didn't return for 2 months to get the retainer. Not surprisingly, the retainer didn't fit and the orthodontist charged her $75 to make a new one. She felt we didn't inform her of how quickly teeth move and…See More
