There has been a dialog on Amyslist (the hygienists chat line) that a patient presented for his alternate recare appt and promptly told his hygienist that the RDH in his periodontist office told him that teeth with veneers should never be scaled. Therefore he would not alow her to even touch those teeth (there were ten teeth involved). Any thoughts, helpful comments that I can pass on to her? I personally have never heard of this and I work for a dentist that does tons of veneers. Thanks for any input.

I am shocked that this information comes from a periodontal office. The bone and tissue support is vital to the longevity of those "store bought' beautiful teeth; they even need extra care and attention from the patient who should be using a rubber tip, water pik, etc. to keep that tissue healthy. What is the patient having perio maintenance for anyways? I would have corresponded with the alternate hygienist asking how she handles these areas. Does she also leave them as is. I suspect the patient doesn't dare do much around them either. I shudder to think how long they will last. I just hope there is excellent documentation for all this advice.

never heard that, I think the patient was just anxious about the tenacity of their veneers. I do know one thing tho. many of the toothpastes the patients use, eg the standard ones we think of, have antifreeze in them. makes the mouth feel all slick and smooth but its not healthy, also hard on the cements, composites etc. Another thing is the Mouth rinses patients use, they are usually colored, which means staining of restorations and margins of veneers, and the alcohol is VERY destructive to the restorations. Not to mention the desiccation of the tissue from the alcohol, which leads to more bacteria and plaque. Patients think they are doing a great job, but they unkowningly are damaging and shortening the life of their restorations.

Biotene makes a great rinse which is clear and alcohol free; helps lubricate doesn't stain and doesn't desiccate the tissue. Yes, I would worry about the tenacity of my veneers but I have seen too many lovely crowns, abutements, etc. so poorly cleaned that the bone loss around them was irreversible. Teeth need a strong and healthy foundation as do bridges which will do the work of more than they were built to do. Care needs to be meticulous and it is worth the effort. Patients and caregivers are a team..it is gratifying when it works and the patient stays healthy and happy.

Hi Mary Jane, thanks for your reply, I agree that cleaning is essential. I too have seen so many bridges, crowns and restorations fail due to lack of hygiene. I used a Dental Gel for cleaning, soothing healing around the restorations and especially the perio considerations. (the gel is also a huge treatment for open oral wounds and perio pockets. I used it directly in extraction sites) The combination of the gel, mouthrinse and toothpaste from Oxyfresh make an unbeatable combination for all these reasons. There is an ingredient called Oxygene that is in all these that work to eliminate odors and bacteria that are very detrimental to the mouth and restorations. The aloe Vera and Camomile are soothing and healing. Patients love these products, so compliance is very high.

Hi Mary Jane, You sound like a very concerned and caring dental professional. are you a dentist or a hygienist?? I can share the info about these products if you like. they have a wonderful website. Part of what I do now, since I only work part time in dentistry, is share with other offices this home care program and help the hygienist or dentist set it up for the office using their own home care program and just enhancing it.

I am a hygienist with a BS but could never leave clinical practice to teach because I love what I do. Please do share; I love information for my patients; I do a lot of continuing ed but your having success with a product makes that information more vital to me.
