This issue just recently came to the attention of the general public on Good Morning America. Is the use of too much denture cream bad for a person's health? The woman interviewed has numerous problems, from numbness and loss of balance to tremors. Some experts are attributing her health problems to too much zinc in her denture cream. But she was also using far beyond the recommended dosage of the cream, literally pouring it on her dentures, while the manufacturer maintains that four small dollops of the cream on dentures are all that is needed. This issue will take years to work its way through courts and medical research of course, but in the meantime, it might be a warning to people to decrease how much denture cream they use if they pour on too much or are experiencing health issues. For dental professionals, this is another good reason to prescribe implant-retained dentures.

I can't get this off my mind. The elderly are so vulnerable. We have a lot of them in our practice and all the Docs go way out of their way to make them comfortable..either all the adjustments they need, just listening, encouragement, etc. Never forget, like being patient with children, we will all be elderly some day.

You are so right Mary. I too can't get off my mind that we will all be elderly someday. We need to treat others as you want to be treated, and hopefully we'll be treated with dignity and respect when we enter our golden years. You're lucky to work in such a caring practice. Going out of the way for the elderly sure doesn't happen everywhere. Now if we can just get the denture cream issue addressed universally.

I hate to be cynical but what it might take is for one of the BIG CEO's Mom's to have a problem with the stuff..but I don't wish that on anyone.

Great news! GlaxoSmithKline said last Thursday it will remove zinc from its denture cream. The company responded to reports that excessive use of the cream over many years can cause neurological damage and blood problems in consumers. I commend GlaxoSmithKline for taking the initiative to get a potentially harmful ingredient off the market. Granted, zinc is only harmful if used in excess, but human nature leads many people to overapply their denture cream when they're having trouble with their dentures. The British manufacturer will cease manufacturing and marketing Super Poligrip Original, Ultra Fresh, and Extra Care products in the U.S. The company plans to reformulate the creams without zinc.
